Pastoral themes had a great appeal in the late 18th and early 19th centuries, when mechanisation and the rapid growth of British cities encouraged a nostalgia for the Arcadian delights of the countryside.
This pattern was revived for the President's Dining Room in the Royal College of Surgeons, Edinburgh.
